BioAsia 2020 organized from 17th-19th February in the city of Hyderabad, India concluded successfully with a number of fruitful discussions, interactions on the topics of AI, Data, Pharma Industry, Patient Centricity and many more engaging topics. The conference marked the 17th edition of the flagship event organized the state of Telangana. The central theme of the conference focussed on the message of ‘Today for Tomorrow’

The Conference kicked off on the evening of 17th February. Pre-conference engagements included a visit to the Genome Valley BioPark in Hyderabad. The area represents Indian high-technology business district housing companies such as Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Lonza Group and recently opened Syngene facility along with IKP Knowledge Park. The visit included delegates from across ecosystems of Switzerland, Germany, Australia, and South Africa.  Furthermore, the visit provided substantial time for the pre-conference interaction time with the key delegates and with the conference organizers.  

Day 1 – Opening

The 17th of February inaugural ceremony included a presentation of Genome valley Excellence Award to CAR-T Cell Therapy Pioneer, Dr. Carl June. The award was presented by H.E K. T. Rama Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Industries and Commerce, Government of Telangana. The welcome remarks were followed by a visit to the exhibition booths, inaugural reception and networking dinner concluding the day events. 

Day 2 – Indo-Swiss breakfast session

The 18th of February marked the high activity day with the Indo-Swiss breakfast session starting off the day. It focussed on the changing dynamics of the life-sciences and Pharma innovation between corporates, Universities, Start-ups, and law. Swissnex India hosted this session. The next one included a keynote address and Fireside Chat by Dr. Carl June giving a perspective on Era of Living Medicine – from pills to cell and gene therapies. The sessions after focused on the topics of Unlocking the potential of public-private partnerships and the future of Indian Life Sciences. The evening session included a CEO conclave session. The second Genome Valley Excellence award was presented to Dr. Vas Narasimhan, CEO, Novartis followed by a keynote address by him and a panel discussion including Mr. Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister for Commerce and Industry, Government of India, Mr. KT Rama Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Industries and Commerce, Government of Telangana.

Day 3 – Indo-German Power breakfast session

The 19th February kicked off with the Indo-German Power breakfast session organized by the XPOMET Innovation in Medicine GmbH, Germany. The session centered its discussion around the Start-ups, AI, Data and collaboration opportunities between the two ecosystems. The next sessions included a spotlight on Women in Life Sciences, Healthcare and their inspiring journeys followed by Digital Health and Generic Industry sessions. The post-lunch sessions included Start-ups pitch, spotlight on Biome and AI for Social Good in advancing affordable healthcare. The conference concluded successfully with the awards to the deserving Start-ups. 

Overall, the conference presented significant opportunities for refreshing current knowledge, getting perspective of Indian Life Sciences and Healthcare Industry, understanding collaborations between the various global ecosystems to the Indian ecosystem and the future outlook of the Industry in adapting concepts of AI and Data centricity technologies directed towards making care more accessible and affordable. We thank the organizers of BioAsia 2020 for collating an interesting and content-oriented agenda for the conference.
